What is Big Local?
Local Trust awarded £1 million to 150 areas around the country. A resident led local partnership was then responsible for drawing up plans for how their grant should be spent in consultation with the residents. Big Local has four objectives.
Big Local Outcome 1. Communities will be better able to identify local needs and take action in response to them.
DWBL has been very successful in this area. New groups established in association with DWBL which have been particularly effective include The Friends of Seaside Rec, Community Stuff, Our Neighbourhood, Seaside Community Hub and Devonshire Collective.
Big Local Outcome 2. People will have increased skills and confidence, so that they continue to identify and respond to needs in the future.
Twenty-one people were elected to the very first DWBL Board, eleven of which were residents. In total, we have had 46 people serving on the Board, about two thirds of whom were residents. They bring enthusiasm and a range of experience and work together under transparent conflict of interest policies. Through practical activity and training they acquire greater confidence and develop new skills as they respond to new opportunities.
Big Local Outcome 3. The community will make a difference to the needs it prioritises.
DWBL has provided over two hundred grant awards to 84 organisations. Good progress has been made on many of our priorities. Some key partners have received multiple awards.
DWBL has facilitated a step change to Seaside Rec, helped protect The Royal Hippodrome Theatre and Leaf Hall for future generations, contributed towards improvements in Seaside Road turning empty shops into a new creative hub and commissioned services for vulnerable residents.
Big Local Outcome 4. People will feel that their area is an even better place to live.
Positive feedback has been received at our many consultation events. Today is the final opportunity to tell us what you think.
